Welcome to ncpanflu.gov, a web site dedicated to North Carolina's efforts to prepare for a pandemic flu outbreak.
Flu Terms
- Pandemic Flu: Pandemic Flu is a virulent human flu that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness. Because there is little natural immunity, the disease can spread easily from person to person. Currently, there is no pandemic flu.
- Avian Flu: Bird flu is caused by avian influenza viruses, which occur naturally among birds.
- Seasonal Flu: The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. October or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but you can still get vaccinated in December and later.
